Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra

Visual identity & website for Nashville’s volunteer orchestra

A member of NPO’s board reached out to me looking for new visual identity for the nonprofit volunteer orchestra’s 20th anniversary, using a process that would include as many of the members as possible. We started with a large workshop open to all players, board members, staff and some alumni. I presented research on recent identity design in the world of orchestras and classical music more broadly and invited them to interact with prompts to get a big picture of how the group saw itself and its place in the landscape of Music City. I compiled this data and presented it back to a smaller design team that I would then work with throughout the design process. The main theme was the dialectic of a group of volunteers who are dedicated and talented — but who do so in order to present concerts at no cost to a public that may see orchestral music as old-fashioned. With this in mind, I tried to achieve a synthesis of professional and approachable.
